Can Your Pet Become a Blood Donor Hero?

North Alabama Veterinary ER + Specialty needs blood donors to save the lives of critically ill or injured pets. Pets may require a transfusion for various reasons, for example, if your pet is injured, or resulting from certain illnesses such as anemia or rat poison ingestion.

For your pet to be eligible to become a blood donor hero, he or she:

  • Must be a healthy weight of 50 pounds or more (dogs) or 10 pounds or more (cats)

  • Be within 1-6 years of age

  • Either spayed or neutered with no prior pregnancies

  • Current on vaccinations

  • Be current on monthly preventatives (heartworm/flea/tick) and not on any other medication

  • Cats: Indoor cats only

Screening Process

We will take a small sample of your pet’s blood to check for blood type. Our staff will discuss these results with you, and if your pet's blood type is currently in need, we will proceed with further testing. Testing includes a comprehensive blood panel, CBC, blood typing panel (dogs), an infectious disease panel, and a physical exam with a doctor, all at no cost to you.
