Cherry Eye Surgery Patient Story
May 22, 2025 · Ophthalmology

Gregor is a Mastiff mix puppy who was referred to NAVES by Banfield (Decatur) for cherry eye.
Dogs have a third eyelid, which is a structure on the inner corner of the eye. A small gland is present on the inside of the third eyelid and is normally not visible. Protrusion of the gland occurs due to an anatomic problem where the attachments around the gland do not function properly. This is called prolapse/protrusion of the gland of the third eyelid, or "cherry eye."
Cherry eye is primarily seen in young dogs, and an animal that has cherry eye in one eye is at increased risk of having cherry eye develop in the other eye. This condition does cause pain or discomfort, but is cosmetically displeasing to some owners and can lead to dry eye disease or damage to the cornea.
Gregor had surgery to correct the cherry eye in his right eye, and also had a procedure performed in both eyes to permanently tack the glands down to help prevent future prolapse of the glands.
Gregor's surgery was successful, and he is doing great!
